How Can You Help to Prevent Tragedy?
Posted On 01/10/2011 10:18:18 by vernpaul
The world seems to be getting nastier each day we flip on that news. It seems to be tragedy after tragedy that continues to air on the tube. When will it end and what can I do to stop it and keep my family safe? Simply put, we will never be safe. There will always be that one crack pot who will seek to destroy society. This is not the end though. As a single individual you can still make a difference. Maybe you can not be a Congresswoman like Gabrielle Giffords. Perhaps it is just volunteering at your local community center or your local parish. God calls us in many ways. All you need to do is to listen. This may mean to listen literally at Church when they call for volunteers for religious education teachers or Eucharistic Ministers. It could be also a calling when you listen privately to God.

Many of us get so entwined with daily work we forsake our duties to listen to God. What is he telling us? Set aside some time and to listen. It might mean turning off the tube or your favorite TV show. Spend some time with the wife or in private. A good time for me is early in the morning after everyone has left the house. Listening to God on the road can be dangerous, but if you are like my wife and have a long drive into work, this maybe your only time to reflect.

Your local parish needs you to become involved. I often look at the Mormon Church and admire the participation of all the members. There church demands it and they are required to put in the hours. We are lucky that as Catholics we have the option to volunteer. Perhaps that should change and it should be mandatory. That is up for debate. Each member of the Church must help in some way. It could be just meeting other people and participating in the events of the Church. What ever it is we owe this to God to keep his church alive. Maybe one day Church involvement will keep someone from committing a tragedy. Maybe one day a lonely person will find God and instead of taking lives that person will give life to someone else. I do not feel volunteering in Church is too much to ask for especially since Jesus, a man who died on the cross for us, does not ask for much in return.
